PLEI

Recently  we learned about an interesting international student Advertising and Business leadership program called PLEI that is based out of a highly regard Mexican university called the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) which is a sister school to MIT.

The AWSC Student Section spoke with a member of the student based Board of Directors for the recently completed 2011 PLEI Advertising and Marketing initiative named Sebastian Patrón. Below is a recap of his description of the program transcribed into English…

What is PLEI?
The International Business Leadership Program (PLEI) is a student organization created and organized by students from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). The program organizes Academic-Commercial Missions every summer in three different regions of the World. All this, with the intention of encouraging the personal and professional development of Mexico’s future leaders, as well as to promote the international growth and profitability of Mexico’s firms and organizations. Throughout its 15 years, PLEI has become one of the most important and prestigious student organizations at ITESM.

Each year, each PLEI participant represents one or several Mexican companies or institutions abroad, and conducts a commercial
or research project, thus contributing to the development of the sponsoring firm or organization in the global marketplace.
PLEI provides a unique experience to each of its participants, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and a global perspective. In addition, the participant learns about different cultures and international business practices, has contact with top executives and authorities of the most prominent companies and institutions of the countries visited, and creates lasting friendships. The student will also earn credit for up to two courses, and attend a summer Seminar at a prestigious University overseas.

PLEI’s Mission
The International Business Leadership Program, PLEI, is a student program of Tecnológico de Monterrey focused on the organization of international academic–commercial missions as a way to encourage a well-rounded education among the future leaders of the country and the development of Mexican enterprises.

Vision 2015
To be the student program with the greatest level of professionalism and international recognition for transforming its participants into global leaders, as well as demonstrating through concrete results, the many benefits for the participating enterprises and institutions.”

Objectives of PLEI

  • To foster in the Mexican youth the entrepreneurial spirit necessary for them to leave their comfort zones, challenge their paradigms, eliminate mental barriers, and exploit their potential to its maximum capacity.
  • To promote Mexico and its companies abroad.
  • To increase the level of education of Mexico
  • To create a bond between the students of Tecnológico de Monterrey,
  • Mexican companies and international business environment.

History
The International Business Leadership Program is born in 1995 with the idea of showing the students of Tecnológico de Monterrey the reality an challenges that the industry faced and the way in which the businesses was conducted at that time.

Through conferences and visits to companies in Monterrey and neighboring cities, the Program took the first step to fulfill its objectives.

After a successful program of local and national visits, the restlessness to cross borders arose, and by directing the glance at those regions of the world that undergone rapid economic development, PLEI’s Academic Commercial Missions were created. In
1996 the first Academic Commercial Mission visited the Asia Pacific region, and was accomplished with great success. Authorities and teachers from Tecnológico de Monterrey accompanied this first group abroad.

After the first Academic Commercial Mission, the program grew in destinations, numbers of participants and results for the companies sponsoring each of the participants.
